How to choose a premium electric bike

Image

A premium electric bike is not defined by its motor alone. It is the balance between a light, well-designed frame, assistance that feels natural, clean integration, quality components and a service you can count on. Start with how you will ride, then judge each bike on these points, and finish with a test ride.

This guide sets out the criteria that matter, and how they apply to the Stajvelo range.

Start with how you ride

The right electric bike depends first on its use. A bike for daily journeys in town and a bike for long climbs on the Riviera do not need the same position, the same equipment or the same character.

  • CityUpright position, mudguards, rack and lights, easy to live with every day.
  • SportA lighter, more dynamic bike, for fast rides and climbs with road bike sensations.
  • GravelWider tyres and a stable position, for tracks and longer loops.
  • RoadAn electric road bike with discreet assistance, close to the feel of a classic road bike.

The frame: weight and material

Weight matters on an electric bike, even with assistance. A lighter bike is easier to handle, more pleasant above the assisted speed, and easier to carry into a lift or onto a train. Carbon allows a stiff, light frame with refined shapes; aluminium is robust and accessible.

The Nomades Sport and the Nomades City are built around a UD 800 carbon monocoque frame with a full carbon fork. The Grima pairs an aluminium frame with a carbon fork, for a comfortable and accessible urban e-bike.

The motor and the assistance

In the European Union, an electric bike that can be ridden like a bicycle assists up to 25 km/h. What sets a premium bike apart is how the assistance is delivered: smoothly from a standstill, progressively on a climb, and without a feeling of resistance beyond 25 km/h.

  • PositionA motor placed at the cranks keeps the weight low and central, and responds to your pedalling.
  • TorqueIt defines the push on climbs and when pulling away. The Nomades Sport uses a Polini EP3+ Evo motor with 75 Nm of torque.
  • FeelThe best assistance is the one you forget. Test it from a standstill, on a slope and around 25 km/h.

Integration and design

On a premium e-bike, the battery, cables and controls are part of the design rather than added to it. Clean integration makes the bike more elegant, easier to clean and better protected. Look at the details: cable routing, how the battery is housed, the quality of the finish and of the paint.

Components and safety

Assistance adds speed and weight, so brakes, tyres and drivetrain have more work to do. Hydraulic disc brakes, tyres suited to your ground and components rated for e-bike use make the bike safer and more durable. Chains, pads and tyres also wear faster on an e-bike, which makes regular servicing more important.

Service and after-sales

An electric bike lives for years. Before you buy, ask who will service it, where, and how quickly. At Stajvelo, bikes are assembled and adjusted in our atelier in Fontvieille, Monaco, and serviced there by the same team. Our guide on how often to service your bike covers the electric specifics.

Always ride before you choose

A specification sheet describes an e-bike; only a ride tells you how the assistance feels. Ride from a standstill, on a climb, above 25 km/h and with the assistance low, then lift the bike as you would at home. Our guide on how to test ride a bike lists what to check.

Frequently asked questions

What makes an electric bike premium?

The balance between a light, well-designed frame, natural assistance, clean integration of battery and cables, quality components and reliable service. Design and finish matter as much as the motor.

Is a carbon e-bike worth it?

For riders who value lightness and ride feel, yes. A carbon frame keeps the bike light and stiff, which makes it more pleasant to ride, especially beyond the assisted speed and when carrying it.

How fast does an electric bike assist in Europe?

In the European Union, the assistance of an electric bike that can be ridden like a bicycle stops at 25 km/h. You can ride faster under your own power.

Can I test a Stajvelo e-bike in Monaco?

Yes. Test rides at our Monaco showroom are complimentary, last about 30 minutes and require only a valid ID. Models and sizes depend on availability, so mention them when you book.
