How to build a bike fleet for a hotel or resort

Image

A good hotel bike fleet is well maintained, matched to the surroundings and simple for guests to use: a clear choice between e-bikes and non-electric bikes, covered storage, and an easy handover at the concierge. The bikes should feel like part of the stay, not an extra service.

This guide is for hotels and resorts thinking about offering bikes to their guests. It covers how to size a fleet, how to choose between e-bikes and non-electric bikes, and what running a fleet involves.

How many bikes does a hotel need?

There is no universal number. A hotel should size its fleet on how many guests are likely to ride on the same day, not on the number of rooms, and adjust over time. A fleet that is always ready serves guests better than a large one that is neglected.

Three questions help:

  • Who ridesLeisure guests, couples, families and sporty guests do not need the same bikes or the same sizes.
  • When they rideA resort in summer sees more demand than a city hotel in winter. Look at your busiest weeks, not the average.
  • Where they rideA flat promenade, a village or a mountain road call for different bikes.

E-bikes or non-electric bikes: which suits a hotel?

E-bikes suit hotels whose guests want an easy, relaxed ride or whose surroundings are hilly, while non-electric bikes suit guests who come for effort and a more sporting ride. Many hotels offer both, so that every guest finds the right bike.

  • E-bikesWelcoming for guests who ride rarely, and helpful on climbs and in the heat. They need charging and battery care.
  • Non-electric bikesSimpler to look after, with more sporting appeal. Better for guests who already ride.
  • A mixCovers most profiles: e-bikes for discovery, non-electric bikes for exploration.

The right choice can change over time. The Kube, a 5-star hotel at the entrance of Saint-Tropez, first offered its guests electric Stajvelo Nomades bikes for two years. It then renewed its fleet with two non-electric Roca Gravel bikes, chosen to explore the Var region in line with the group's taste for effort and sporting performance. The hotel suggests two outings: an urban route through the village and a sportier ride into the countryside. Read the full story in Kube x Stajvelo.

How to run a hotel bike fleet

Running a fleet comes down to four habits: store the bikes under cover, check them before each ride, look after batteries as the manufacturer recommends, and make the handover easy. Guests notice all four.

  1. Store under coverKeep the bikes near the entrance or the concierge desk, protected from rain and sun.
  2. Check before each rideTyres, brakes, chain, saddle height and lights should be checked before a bike goes out.
  3. Charge with careStore and charge e-bike batteries following the manufacturer's recommendations, in a dry, ventilated place.
  4. Hand over with careAdjust the saddle, explain the assistance modes, suggest a route and offer a lock or helmet.

Stajvelo's hotel and fleet offer covers installation, staff training and regular technical servicing, so that the team at the front desk is ready from the first day.

Buy or lease a hotel bike fleet?

Hotels either buy their bikes or lease them over a fixed period. Leasing spreads the cost and can include maintenance, while buying means owning the fleet. Stajvelo's hotel and fleet offer includes both purchase and long-term leasing, with maintenance included depending on the package.

For the Kube project, Locamotions was the leasing partner. It offers long-term contracts of 24 to 36 months with maintenance included, and the hotel's general manager pointed to the absence of a significant upfront cost. Make the bikes part of the property

Bikes feel part of a hotel when they look like it. Stajvelo's hotel offer includes design, finishes, upholstery and branding adapted to the identity of the property. A few recommended routes from your team, like the Kube's village ride and countryside outing, also help guests make the most of the bikes.

Stajvelo is a premium bicycle brand based in Monaco, and the Nomades bikes are assembled in our Fontvieille atelier.

Frequently asked questions

How many bikes does a hotel need?

There is no fixed number. It depends on the size of the property, the season, the profile of your guests and the surroundings. A good approach is to start from how guests actually ride, then adjust the fleet over time. Our team can help you think it through.

Should a hotel choose e-bikes or non-electric bikes?

It depends on the guest and the route. E-bikes suit relaxed rides, hilly surroundings and guests who ride rarely. Non-electric bikes suit guests who want effort and a more sporting ride. Many hotels offer a mix.

How should a hotel store and charge e-bikes?

Keep the bikes under cover, close to where guests collect them, and store and charge batteries in line with the manufacturer's recommendations. A dry, ventilated place is a sensible starting point.

Should a hotel buy or lease its bike fleet?

Both are possible. Buying means owning the fleet, while long-term leasing spreads the cost and can include maintenance. Stajvelo's hotel and fleet offer includes both purchase and long-term leasing, with maintenance included depending on the package.

How much maintenance does a hotel bike fleet require?

Bikes used by many guests need regular checks and servicing, and the right rhythm depends on how often they ride. Stajvelo's hotel and fleet offer includes regular technical servicing. Talk to our team to discuss what suits your property.
