A custom gravel bike is defined by three decisions: the frame, the fit and the build. Carbon gives a gravel bike its lightness and its ability to filter rough ground; the right size and contact points make long days comfortable; the drivetrain, wheels and finish give it its character.
This guide walks through each decision, with the Stajvelo Rocchetta and Nomades Gravel as examples, so you know what to ask before you start. To compare the models side by side, see our custom gravel bikes.
Why carbon for a gravel bike
Carbon lets a frame be shaped precisely: stiff around the bottom bracket and head tube, where pedalling and steering need it, and more forgiving where the rider feels the ground. On a gravel bike, that balance matters more than outright weight, because hours on tracks and broken roads reward a bike that stays calm.
The Stajvelo Rocchetta is a carbon platform built for this kind of riding. Our ambassador Pierre Bour rode his across the 1,430 km gravel route of the Grande Traversée du Massif Central, with no punctures and no mechanical problems. Read his story.
All-Road or Gravel?
The Rocchetta exists in two versions. The choice depends on the ground you ride most.
- Rocchetta All-RoadFor riders who share their time between tarmac and good tracks. Reference build in Shimano Ultegra Di2 2x12, with two chainrings for a wide, smooth spread of gears.
- Rocchetta GravelFor tracks, climbs and rougher ground. Reference build in Shimano GRX 825 Di2 1x12, a single chainring that keeps the drivetrain simple and quiet.
- Nomades GravelThe electric option: a carbon e-bike for gravel, for longer loops and steeper climbs with discreet assistance.
Other drivetrains are available on request. Our guide to choosing between Gravel and All-Road goes further.
Geometry and fit
Geometry describes how a frame places you on the bike: how far you reach to the handlebar, how high the front sits, how stable the bike feels at speed. For gravel, a slightly more upright position helps you look ahead, breathe and stay relaxed over long hours.
The frame size is the base. The fit is then refined with the contact points:
- StemLength and angle adjust your reach and the height of your hands.
- HandlebarWidth and flare, for control on loose descents.
- CranksLength chosen for your legs and your cadence.
- SaddleShape, height and setback, the key to comfort over distance.
A size that is wrong cannot be corrected by components. This is why we suggest a test ride at our Monaco showroom, where several Rocchetta bikes are available to try.
The build: drivetrain, wheels and tyres
Drivetrain
One chainring or two? A single chainring is simpler, quieter and easy to live with on rough ground. Two chainrings give smaller steps between gears, useful on long road sections and fast group rides. Electronic shifting brings precise changes in every condition; remember to check the shifter batteries before a long trip.
Wheels and tyres
Wheels and tyres change the feel of a gravel bike more than almost any other part. Lighter, stiffer wheels make the bike more lively; wider tyres at the right pressure add grip and comfort. Our article on Gravel and All-Road tyre width explains how to choose.
Finishes and details
A custom gravel bike should look like it belongs to you. Paint, contrasts and lettering, bar tape, saddle and small details such as bottle cages and bags all contribute. For the most expressive projects, we work with specialist painters; Charles Leclerc's one-off Roca, painted by Daniel Designs in Italy, is one example.
Every Stajvelo is then assembled, checked and adjusted in our atelier in Fontvieille, Monaco, and handed over set up for its rider.
Frequently asked questions
Is carbon a good choice for a gravel bike?
Yes, for riders who value lightness and comfort over long distances. Carbon allows a frame to be stiff where pedalling and steering need it and more forgiving elsewhere, which keeps the bike calm on rough ground.
One chainring or two on a gravel bike?
A single chainring is simpler and quieter on tracks; two chainrings give smaller steps between gears for long road sections. The Rocchetta Gravel uses a single chainring in its reference build, the Rocchetta All-Road two.
Can I personalise the geometry of a Rocchetta?
The Rocchetta is offered in standard sizes. The fit is refined with stem, handlebar, cranks and saddle, set from your measurements and riding.
Can I test a Rocchetta before choosing?
Yes. The Rocchetta All-Road is available for a complimentary 30-minute test ride at our Monaco showroom. Sizes depend on availability, so mention your height when you book.
